Unhappy IMPS/2 Intellimouse problems

OK, sorry if you've heard this one before, but I've been researching this problem and I get nowhere.

The problem is the super-annoying "mouse-in-the-corner" problem with an intellimouse: the mouse will occaisionally freeze/shoot into the corner/fire off random clicks.

I have tried:
1. editing the hell out of XF86Config
- tried different devices (/dev/mouse, /dev/psaux)
- tried different protocols ("PS/2" "IMPS/2" "AUTO")
- added/removed ZAxisMapping, Buttons options
2. Turning off / Leaving on gpm

This has happened to me on two systems now. Can anybody help?

Have a look to see if you have a program called "imwheel" installed, it can cause this type of problem on some systems. Imwheel was originally designed to provide support for wheel mice when most linux programs/desktops had none, but now that most do it can cause conflicts. I've also found that gpm is better left off on my system, it causes more problems than being able to use a mouse in the console solves.....I never need a mouse in the console anyway.

I fixed it in Redhat 7.2

Maybe this will work for you. Change the following files to these options:

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "imps/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
Option "Buttons" "5"
EndSection

/etc/X11/XF86Config

Section "Pointer"
Protocol "imps/2"
Device "/dev/mouse"
ZAxisMapping 4 5

Hope this helps

better but no smoking gun

thanks for responses; i've been able to improve the mouse problem by insuring that XF86Config-4, XF86Config and /etc/sysconfig/mouse all have similar settings.

I've noticed that /dev/psmouse seems to work better than /dev/mouse (which RH7.2 installed as a symlink to /dev/psaux).

However, the problem still appears, just not as bad. It appears there is some kind of bug in the XF86 code, but it's manageable now.

Thanks Again!
