Question images with *.tex extension

hello,

I am planning to make a review of the 'chemtool' (molecular drawing) program for my website. This program has the possibility to export images to the *.tex (latex) file format. Can anyone tell me what this file format is being used for?
I normally use *.eps or *.ps to insert images into my latex documents (I can also save as *.eps with chemtool). It seems impossible to compile latex files with included *.tex images, so I was just wondering what the *.tex is used for?
