image recognition
Is there any way to have a shell based software decipher numbers within an image? Like in the following image: http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2..._d/numbers.png

Now you have to admit this seems a little out of the ordinary. That looks like the security numbers used at places like amazon.com and other on line sales. If there was a way that would be a big security risk.
But to answer your questions I think that in order for numbers or letters to be read that have to be in a line format like the are when you scan a letter you wrote. So No.

I'm actually currently conducting research for my undergraduate senior project on reading such text... and then combatting such techniques. That being said, from what I've worked on so far, I can tell you that it is possible to read many of these, it's just non-trivial and not always accurate. On the flip side, I am curious as to what legitimate purpose you have in attempting to read that text.

lol...not what your thinking
For a website I go to they use these images to prevent swamping the server, but certain information is only updated when the code is entered, and I would like to script a method to have the info automatically updated retrieved and logged. Nothing illegal involving amazon!

Sounds like they're trying to PREVENT people from automatically pulling data.
