image creating apps for linux

Hi, i'm looking for a good app to create images with. I know there is the gimp and it's good software. But as far as I know you can not actually create images with it, you can only edit them. At this moment i'm downloading corel draw, but I have the impression corel has stoped supporting linux for there draw application. The most recent version I found that was suitible for linux was version 9. There is a version 11 out, but not for linux. :( (as far as I know)
So in short, I need somthing like corel draw. Does any on know a good app?

Well, okey, so lets say I want to draw a simple line. How to I do that? I see there is a pencile there, but how do I draw a straight line? Just an example?

what? just use the program... read instructions at gimp.org. drawing lines is pretty trivial.
