Thing about it is, people who buy prebuilt computers generally want constant tech support from whoever they bought it from. Are you able/willing to provide that kind of assistance? The people who don't care about that stuff are the ones who build them themselves.
possibly focus on a specific use for the PC, other than the great unwashed. For example, firewal box, webserver etc... this is not exactly your dream but might make some nice $... which is a good dream too. Good biz advice is let the customer DEMAND a product, smile and offer it to him with service and a good price.
U kin do that EZ

I was thinking about preloaded linux firewalls with vpn + dmz based on smoothwall &
linux web+ file servers based on clarkconnect.

Originally posted by Cooner There are some good points here but I see one obvious one you are missing. If this is to be a profitable business than why are you limiting your market B4 you even open the door?
Saying that you are only going to sell Linux machines is like opening a bar that only allows women. Windows has more than 80% of the market right now, you personally may not like it but the fact is other people do.
What do you care what OS they use as long as you can sell them a machine that makes them happy. Offering Linux is a good thing and more businesses should go that route but I doubt they will say "If you want Windows you will have to go down the street".
sometimes? it's a good idea to DUMP 80% of the customers... IF 80% of the customers create 99.9% of the problems... this is an old adage but can be useful. The point is look for those folks who can and will pay for what you can do best. I get folks all the time who want me to "fix" a little problem on their windows box (cus boxes are my fun and they know it)... and probably I could, but there'd be no time left for me and they'd drain my energy...and they'd probably want it for $10 /hr.
As for special firewall boxes, sheesh, I have just spent about SIX weeks trying to do 3 legged fw box... and it is up but barely. Lots of things still unanswered, and there is surely a market in any reasonable sized town for firewall boxes that even do a pretty good job.
I like talking biz..ez 4 me compared to talking linux...which is tuff, but fun.
enjoy,

All the comments here are great.. I think you should just do as you wish. You know what they say, when you are starting a business many people will try to tell that what you are doing is not going to go anywhere or that you don't have a chance.. Just follow your dream.. And my personal opinion is that you should sell "Computers (The hardware itself) and that the OS should be up to the customer to decide what he/she wants to buy, this will open many more doors for you. And like many people said here, have a manual with Linux instruccions and letting people know how secure and reliable Linux is, this way even if you don't sell a Linux machine, at least the customer has an idea of what Linux is. Good luck.
