Cool Idea: create a 3dMark like tool that shows off and benchmarks compiz fusion

Hi

I had this idea some time ago and the problem I had was this:

How to set the settings of compiz fusion ona graphic card that proper framerate is maintained? How can you find out how strong or weak the gfx card is?
Well, if you had a benchmark, very much like 3dmark, but running in compiz, showing several windows, moving them, then rotating the cube, zooming in, zooming out, activating snow, water, standard stuff and measuring how many frames per second the card can manage. Then, if the card is fast, hence the fps high, the system activates more effects, or if it is too slow, deactivates some. This is like self calibration.

Then, one could create a demo mode, where the best and coolest of compiz is showed off with cool music. This way, we can show windows users that we are actually a little futher than their measly little effects and even on less powerful hardware. It would be a very hot showoff and demonstration.

I think that compiz should be promoted a little, since most people don't know what it can do, especially on strong hardware.

Now how to reach this?
I am looking for a way to control compiz from python (which I can handle, C is a little too high for me ;-) *blush*)

Are there ways to control compiz from python on? Or can I do that from X? Triggering the cube rotation (through simulating key presses?) grabing a window and move it around a little?

I am just throwing this idea in here, please do copy it if you like, I would love to see this done on Linux and will contribute what I can. I think this would be a very cool feature included in Ubuntu or any other distro.
But especially in Ubuntu, since it lends itself so much as a desktop distro and makes people excited.

I would love to hear feedback, what you think about this.

I have no idea how up-to-date this wiki entry is, but you can definitely script much if compiz via dbus:

thanx for the pointer, d-bus is the way to go! Pretty cool, I just tried it out (with the example of the water) and it works.

It should be no problem translating this into python.
