ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags = ?

What are ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags in MP3 files? I found a program called Kid3 in my menu that edits these tags, whatever they are. I've never heard of them. I just want to make sure this program is something I can eliminate.

ID3 tags are data stored in the mp3 files that include such things as the Song Title, Track Number, Album, Artist, and even cover art.

Kid3 is a very good utility to edit these tags.

Software (Amarok), and hardware (iPod) mp3 players use these tags to display information about the currently playing tracks, and may have the ability to edit tags, however I find the features in Kid3 very good, as it allows you to search internet based databases, etc for your albums..
It is safe to remove Kid3, as it is only used for editing tags, but if you want to edit tags... you might want it (and you can re-install it later)

Thank you, Bugz. I will uninstall it.
