i486 - Help!
I've got my mousetop off and have to manually roll the stupid bars and push the click button inside it to get it to work. I can't find a mouse with a serial port for this machine. Is there any way to move the arrow around with the keyboard?
I have a p/s-2 to serial adaptor and it wont work with any of the choices I have in mouseconfig (red hat 6.2) and the probe fails. I have the right port, ttyS0 (did ls-l in /dev/mouse). I also tried a trackball with a bus>p/s-2>serial adaptor with an unsuccessful probe and all options given tried. Where can I get an old mouse fast with a serial plug? Could my brand new p/s-2 to serial adaptor be bad? Any help would be appreciated. and I've tried every combination of rebooting, etc. |
it might be that the link /dev/mouse is pointing to the wrong port. try changing it to one of the other /dev/ttyS things . try changing the link to point to /dev/ttyS1 .
and why do you need to hack open the mouse to get it to work. just try cleaning all the rollers and the ball. Alex P,S, if i said anything unclear or you need more detailed instructions then drop us a line. P.P.S. the p/s2 -> serial adaptor shouldn;t make a difference at all |
I have found that almost any ps/2 mouse will work but I prefer the three button type, which the third button can also be a wheel if you like a wheel mouse. My favorite linux mouse is the standard size and shape three button that is rubberized so it is easy to grip.
just set the mouse symlink in /dev to be psaux |
Thanks all - it seems I had the bad luck to buy not one but two DEFECTIVE p/s2 to serial adapters. I bought 5 mice that were ps2 and not Usb and were not micro$oft and the first had it's own ps2 to serial adapter. Now I have 8 mice that work to chose from. And to the first reply, the mouse had to be taken apart to work as it was so old it quickly broke during cleaning! guess I'll have some kind of mouse party tonight.
