I typically used exceed by simply running it as an X server on the Windows host, and then logging into the Unix host with a SSH client with X forwarding enabled. After that, it is possible to invoke any X clients on the Unix host (say, a web browser, xterm, etc) and the resulting X window appears on the local Windows host. Simply running exceed is all that is required. I haven't used it for quite a while now, so I can't give any particular details, but I know there wasn't anything 'secret' that had to be set up.
Mapping shared drives should not require exceed; this can be done using Samba on the Linux/Unix host and the normal Windows network support on the Windows host.
