i want to compile kernel 1.0.0


dear linux experts,
i want to compile and make kernel 1.0.0(the first kernel sources of linux)
but its asking gas..... yup gnu assembler.
i am using ubuntu 9.10
and if you ask why i am compiling this kernel....
because the truth is to study complete linux kernel...... we have to be expert in basic kernel of linux!
please please help me..

NOTE:PLEASE DONT DISCOURAGE ME TO AVOID COMPILING KERNEL 1.0.0 AND TELLING ME COMPILE INTERESTING KERNEL SOURCES LIKE 2.4.......

What exactly do you mean "its asking gas"? What about it? Its looking for it and can't find it or theres something wrong with gas? Have you tried a really old version of GCC?
What exactly have you tried? I have tried before without any success, but that was when I was much less experienced.
I am also interested in compiling linux-1.0 IF it is even possible. Just a warning though, even if you do get it compiled, chances are it won't boot on modern hardware.
If you are interested in OS development or Kernel development, and not specifically linux, take a look at Plan 9 from Bell Labs or Haiku, both of those have an easy to compile kernel with very clean and neat source code that is much shorter than the linux kernel source.
