I need to reset the file type application associations

KDE has started flashing "Could not find mime type application/octet-stream" messages whenever I try to open any file (which does not prevent the file from opening). I'm pretty sure it's because I set a file type application association incorrectly: just before this started, I was changing the "plain text" application association in Konqueror's settings; before I found "plain text," I fooled around with some other application association, but now I can't remember what that was. This is annoying. Assuming it is a problem with the file type application associations, can I automatically reset them all?

The KDE documentation says the file associations data is stored in ~/.kde/share/mimelnk. I found mine (Debian 6.0) in ~/.local/share/mime/. So it seems you may have to search through the hidden files in your home directory to find the file associations and delete them.

If I can't figure out exactly where in that directory the file associations are, can I just delete all the files? Will they regenerate with default settings?

Anything in the hidden files in your home folder can be safely deleted without harming the system. Those files hold your personal settings (as opposed to system settings). You will just have to reset your personal settings for the associated app.
