If BusyBox is coming up, something is not working right. What errors do you get before BusyBox?

Could you do a net installation of ubuntu and then just install and specify xfce?

I have a lot of trouble getting the Buntu family to run on most of my computers.
You can try booting into safe video mode - or typing 'noacpi' into the command line on the bottom of the screen (the one that lets you modify boot parameters) - or try an older version of Ubuntu. It's weird because GOS, which is version 7.1 Ubuntu, will load just fine on these computers. I now use PCLinux and SimplyMepis, which seem to take everything I throw at them.
