I need a graphical login screen

Something went wrong with MEPIS or my GRUB, and it reverted from a graphical to a text login. I thought I saw my MEPIS liveCD (which was for a different version) say I could go to a graphical login with Ctrl-Alt-F7 or -F8, but neither worked for the HD installation. Is there a solution other than reinstalling GRUB from the liveCD? (Which I have done before, since this has happened at least once before.)

It sounds like something has gone wrong with your grub configuration file. Could you post the contents of /boot/grub/menu.lst

I read your bit about graphical vs text login.

can you be more expicit?

1 do you mean....you click on an icon...image that represents you to actually login

2 do you mean when grub first appears you see some graphics and or animation?

3 do you mean when kernel is booting you see graphics and animation?

Mepis was kde I think its back to gnome? so 1 is either KDM or GDM config file error

2 grub splash is what jailbait (what a name??) is alluding to

3 kernel splash is kernel compile issues or bootsplash package not installed

The beauty of Mepis 7.

You can easily restore Grub or x configuration with the live cd. Mepis Assistant. Look under Mepis guides and how-tos.
