i need a console...

how do i open a console??? using redhat 8.0 that is....

i'm played around with all the features that i could possibly imagine, and have gotten nowhere. i still don't quite understand the file system... but when trying to mount my cd- drives, i NEED a console... i d/l'd redhat for free, ,so i don't have any documentation, and all the online guides say, "open a console" i'd love to open a console, and once i open this console, i'm gonna console the hell out of it, and do lot's of neat stuph. i'm gonna get you, ,console....

::noob alert::

I'm not too sure about Redhat but if your in X go to the windows equivalent start menu and find emulators and use one of them.
To get to the real console hold down CTRL+ALT and press F1 to F6, to get back into x then hold down CTRL+ALT and press F7

Hope that helps

once again, herein lies the problem... i don't know how to run a program... everyone assumes i know the basics of the basics.. i don't. i'm a dumbass. dumber than that. i'll do anything in winblowz, i can only browse the net in linux... i need to open a console.. plz hlp!

What are you using, Gnome, KDE??
If you hold down CTRL+ALT+F1 at the same time you have a console, could'nt be simpler, it works on Mandrake and Slackware and any other Linux I've tried.

GT I.N.C 10-15-2002 04:05 AM

Well what does your desktop look like...whats on the windows like 'startbar'

themightybuck 10-15-2002 04:12 AM

well, we got a redhat where the start buttons would be, and the task bar has some big icon, sort of link the winblowz quick launch icons.. and then we got this grid here, my "workspace switcher" which i really like, and i think is kinda cool, very nice for multitasking (what am i talking about, i can only complete one task, ,lol) and then we got out "taskbar" buttons, one for every "window" open. and at the right we got our clock. i need to fix the time on it, ,too.

When your logging in you should be able to pick which window manager to use, log out and back in to see if you have that option,

GT I.N.C 10-15-2002 04:19 AM

Your not using kde or gnome...well gnome but Red Hats remake of it....as Gnome is open source they tweaked it for what they think there users need.....

yeah, i logged out, and i switched from default to gnome, although it's the same thing.... hmmm.... anyway, i got my console by hitting alt+ctrl+F1
is there a way to get a console up by stayin' in gnome?

GT I.N.C 10-15-2002 04:45 AM

Ok click on the startbar like thing...and there should be something like 'Run Program' or 'Run Command' (i don't use gnome) and when you click on that..just type 'konsole' i am not sure what gnome uses but KDE uses konsole...or search around in your menus it should be under 'Terminals' or something like that..

There will be a horizontal bar( called panel) similar to the taskbar in windows at the bottom of the screen . search for a icon that have a picture of monitor in it . Click on it.:D
