I have a problem with /var (please advise)

Hello there,

Here's my situation:

Someone (previous administrator)has installed RedHat (default layout) on one of our servers.
He did not create a /var LV, so I wish to do so. I have created a LV, but as you guys already know, if I mount /var onto my new LV, the contents of /var will not be available. as they will still reside on the old /var

Apart from rebuilding the system and adding a LV for /var, how would I go about moving /var onto the new LV without causing too many problems with syslogs etc?

Thanks.

The easiest way would be to boot on a live distro supporting your file-system and logical volumes, move the /var directory to its new location, fix the moint point et voilą !

Cant do that, the server is on a local network (no distribution server involved).

How would I do it in RESCUE mode ?

Thanks.

I don't get you. There is no need for network access or a distribution server to boot locally on a CD.

The same way, rescue mode is just that: a minimal live distro.
