I guess you can consider me a newbie. I run a linux filer server on my network at home. I had a hotswap IDE drive, and decided to be brave and to try it out. I unmounted the drive and removed it with no problem. I actually needed that particular hard drive, so I decided to put in a new hard drive. Now. no matter wheather the drive is in the HotSwap bay or not, I keep getting a kernel error saying:
ide1: status timeout: status=0xff {busy}
I've read about this in the past and even though you may have a hot-swapping bay, I'm pretty certain the kernel still doesn't support re-scanning IDE channels yet, something I stumbled accross while looking into software raid... poke around on google for a bit you'll probably find the same thing.
