Question I get this message on bootup: libkmod: ERROR ... /etc/modprobe.d/rt18xxxu.conf line 1: ignoring bad line starting with 'blacklist'

Hi.

Recently I was trying a few things to get wifi dongles working. They work fine now but I get this message on bootup:

Code:
libkmod: ERROR ../libkmod/libkmod-config.c:635 kmod_config_parse: /etc/modprobe.d/rt18xxxu.conf line 1: ignoring bad line starting with 'blacklist'
I put a hash in front of 'blackist rtl8xxxu' in the rtl8xxxu.conf file but that did not solve it. I then deleted the rtl8xxxu.conf file but that did not solve it either.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Did you run mkinitrd or dracut (or whatever is appropriate for your system) after you made the change?

Hi Pete.

No, I'm not familiar with those commands. I'm on Debian 9 Stable.

I think it happened after I came across and ran this line from another forum thread:
Code:
echo "blackist rtl8xxxu" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8xxxu.conf

If you change a module blacklist conf file you need to remake the initrd or initramfs (I'm not sure which one debian uses) file in boot folder. Try 'man mkinitrd' and 'man dracut'.
It'll explain how to use it. (Or just mkinitrd --help).

I don't think the command in post #3 was actually needed to get any of my wifi dongles working. I expected that deleting it would remove the bootup message.

Other changes can do an auto mkinitrd which would then incorporate your changes anyway- the most obvious one being a kernel upgrade.

But if you're still having a problem with the rtl8xxxu.conf then it is worth a try.

On booting up this morn, I notice the rtl8xxxu error message is gone. I don't think I updated my kernel recently. I'm not sure what fixed it.
