I don't see any output when using SysReq

I've had my notebook freeze a couple of times and wanted to be ready to get more information the next time it happens. Did some reading on the "Alt+SysReq+*" stuff and thought I would try it out. When I try any of the commands, say Alt+SysReq+m for example, I can notice the system do a little work but then see no output. I made sure that my kernel (2.6.9) had been compiled with the CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ option (looked at /boot/config-xxx, right?) and changed /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq to '1' from '0'. I don't have root privileges, but I do have 'sudo' privileges. When I tried the "Alt+SysRq+k" command, I wasn't able to type anymore in the console I had up, but I did shutdown the system (uncleanly) with further commands. Oh, I use KDE and usually work with a "Linux Console" running bash.

So what am I missing to get some memory or process information from the SysReq action? I read about some interaction with the X server, but didn't fully understand.

I'll be happy to provide more info if it is helpful...

Thanks...
