I these past few days i been trying to build a fast optimized kernel for my system but it's slower than winxp on the same computer in the past i could get it to run almost as fast as winxp but i lost that config file and my currrent config file churns out a slow kernel. Im completely stumped as to why this kernel is so slow im about to give up not because i want to, but because i am completely out of ideas i dont want to go back to windows but if i cant get linux to outperform windows like it's supposed to well im gonna have to go back. i forgot to mention the reason i dont have any GLX or DRI support in the kernel is because i have a GeForce2 so i have to patch it anyway with the NVIDIA installer.

Well once again i've managed to solve my own problem but i'm still not 100% sure on what exactly was slowing down the kernel but basically it came down to shrinking the kernel down as far as it could and well thats my best guess and probably the best guess.

Yeah I know I should have done that all along but you'd be paranoid too if the first couple times you tried to remove EVERYTHING thats not needed from your kernel resulted in well.... disaster. And I've noticed some things left in the kernel really don't affect the speed of it execpt for whatever the heck was in there that was so adversly affecting it's speed. Really I'm smarter than I appear you gotta believe me...

Sounds as if you are running abour average

I think my 9th compile, I got my first working kernel. I managed to have both available and could use my old one until I got it right.

Building Gentoo, it only took me two tries and the gaming-sources seem to be the snappiest in X.

For speed ups, you may want to try the pre-empt kernel patch.

The Linux kernel preemption project

Unfortunately im having the same problem again it makes no sense at all i even took out power management support and shrunk my kernel a good 100KB's but this kernel is running even slower how is this possible i don't get it? I just don't know what to do.

Well I've managed to shrink the kernel down as far as possible, yet it runs even slower that the default kernel. If I run doom legacy at a resolution above 320x240 it's so choppy it's unplayable; how the hell can a big bloated kernel out perform a small optimized kernel? it makes no sense at all. I really need some help with this. I am completely stumped and dont know what else to do except call it quits since I feel I've tried everything if you dont believe me i can post the new config file maybe I didnt enable some feature that drastically speeds up the kernel I just dont know what to try next. it feels like I've tried everything.

Whew! What a relief! I finally figured out for sure what was slowing down my kernel. It turns out I was overlooking the option called MTRR under "Processor Types and Features" which defaults to off when you dont use a config file which would explain why sometimes I would have a fast kernel (when I was using a config file) and other times would have pathetically slow kernel (when I wasnt). It wasnt that I didn't think the option was important I honestly didn't notice it there so I paid no attention to it. Well at least this horrible ordeal is finally over, it feels like a big weight has been lifted off my shoulders!

Good. I had noticed that was uncheched when I did my Gentoo kernel, but it had slipped my mind (I have a slippery mind, it seems).

I overlooked that in your config. I kept looking at dma, but you had that right.

Now you can investigete The Linux kernel preemption project for an even snappier seeming kernel when in x or gaming situations.

So where is this? I never had a comp that took over 2 mins. to boot and then ran so stinkingly slow. Maybe this will help. I'm using RedHat 9.

Turn off all the services you don't need. Kudzu for instance isn't needed unless hardware is changed.

If you are running any servers turn them off. Run only what you need on startup.

A good read of the Customization Guide for Red Hat 9.0 should give you hints/ideas.

MTRR, ah that helps. Not having it is not, however, as bad as removing elf binary support ;-) I think I put it as modular in my first kernel build. Needless to say, that kernel didn't boot.

The help in the kernel configuration is quite enjoyable -- for example, for virtual terminal: "If unsure, say Y, or else you won't be able to do much with your new shiny Linux system :-)"

To quote my mentor who wrote me a shell script to stop some procs:

"Why did you reboot it?

Now you're hosed beyond repair by yourself... and i can't sit there and fix it.... you didn't need to reboot it yet.

put the Redhat #1 disk back in the drive and rebuild it... there's no hope in trying to teach you how to recover it now...
