how to zip a folder as tar.gz


Hi im designing a program which will zip a folder i choosed as in tar.gz format but i dont know which shell command does that
does anyone have any idea about this?

tar czvf file.tar.gz Directory/

or

tar cjvf file.tar.bz2 Directory/

Bzip2 (.bz2) compression is a bit better than that of gzip (.gz)
