How to update package info ?

In order to install Gaim1.2, I installed GTK+2.0 manually.
But in my redhat 9.0 , command "rpm -q gtk+" still output "gtk+-1.2",
How to update this package infomation?
Thanks a lot

See the rpm man pages, in the section Database Maintenance.

By "manually" do you mean you compiled it from source or used an rpm from somewhere? If you compiled it from source, rpm doesn't recognise any packages that are not installed through it.

Yes, I compiled it from source ,and "make ,make install...." .
According to reddazz, I couldn't use this package anyway?
