Question How to stop X11 w/o logging out?

hello folks.

I am trying to install a piece of software under WINE but the splash screen for that software is blocking everything that comes after it. As a result, I would like to try killing the gui without logging out as Ctrl+Alt+F1 does. I'm hoping to restart the gui with everything where it is -minus the blocked portion. Although, any suggestions would be appreciated. I have been fighting with this on and off for about a month. I do need to get this up and running. I would hate to have to trash everything in order to put windoze back on. TIA

If I am understanding this, edit your /etc/inittab file and change default runlevel from 5 to 3. You will come up to a terminal instead. Login in and start your gui from there. Which command it is depends on the gui. I never go this route so cannot confirm the commands. The command ' startx ' should start the gui with login manager. To start KDE I think it is startkde and to start gnome I do not know. Not sure if this will work or if what you want can be done.

is this software limewire by any chance? the linux version i use (no need to run it under wine) puts up a splash screen and does nowt ,i have to alt-tab to the other window it opens behind it to configure it's options.

That being said if it runs a splash screen whe nit starts what good is killing Xserver then logging back in? i dont get it

telinit 3

telinit 3 (i think you have to be root in some distros)
telinit 5 should get you back into the gui

no. it's actually a program called Calyx Point. They have NO support for linux and don't intend to. I do just about everything from inside linux these days and I really do not want to have to make a dual boot just for this sw.

telinet: command not found. I guess Ubuntu doesn't support that feature. Thanks for the (quick) responses thus far everyone. I do appreciate it.

It might not be in your path. Usually in /sbin. ' /sbin/init 3 '
