How to shell out of and back into xwindows?

How do you shell out of xwindows to the console and then go back to xwindows?

Do you mean shut down X? - try:
init 3

Then to get back:
init 5

If you want to leave it running and just get to a console

Then to get back:

You can get to a terminal without killing X, if you want... Just hit [ctrl]+[alt]+[fX], replacing X with a number from 1 through 6. Once into a terminal, you can move to another with just [alt]+[fX]. To get back to X, [alt]+[f7].
