how to run multiple X windows?

i'll start by stating what i'm actually trying to do.
i'm trying to run a game server (HLDS) and KDE at the same time but not together. i tried to run HLDS in normal console but it says it cannot get the server's ip (i can't connect to the internet is what it's saying) so i did the xinit command and ran it there, works great! then i want to run KDE for general things of quick web browsing quick and easy installation of stuff and most importantly, allowing my dad to play XFreeCell by just clicking on the gear shaped thing on the desktop instead of typing a bunch of commands he doesn't want to learn. when i try to load KDE in a second login i guess i could call it, by that i mean when you push Ctrl+Alt+F2, it says X server is already running and it can't connect.

how can i run 2 logins (as same user) and both run X at the same time?

OK, there's a number of different ways to run multiple X sessions on one machine. By far the easiest one that I've found is this:

Boot the machine and run your 1st program in that X session.
Press <CTRL>+<ALT>+<F2> (or any other F key for that matter), log in as root and rub gdm (or kdm). This should give you an error about an X session already being run on tty7, so attempting another one. You should then be given a GUI login (the gnome one). Log in, run your 2nd program and away you go. Make sure that you go back to F2 and log out from root. You should then be able to switch back and forth between the two X sessions with <CTRL>+<ALT>+<F7>/<F8>.

Hope this helps.

I tried the gdm trick but it didnt work, it doesn't start another session. Anyways i saw and tried and it worked another method posted by one of the Linux gurus, but i forgot the exact syntax. Anyways you need to specify to start X on terminal 8 using the same monitor as seven.
Startx [options here}
but i forgot the options. Either go dig through man startx or wait till one of the Linux gods comes and gives you the command again.
WARNING: Running two KDE sessions is a bad idea. It will slow your computer to a crawl and eat up your memory. Running two lihter window managers, or KDE and a lighter window manager should be fine tho...
I know i didnt help much... but i at least i hope i put you on the right track

I run Debian Sid and have it set to a graphical log in (on F7/:0), while logged in to a consol (F1) I just type the following to start another X on F8/:1

Code:
startx -- :1
Naturally this would use .xinitrc if I had such a file, so I can have .xsession for my normal login and .xinitrc for the second GUI. I believe there is a way to specify a different startup script on the command line as well.

I only mention the gdm trick because I had no end of problems using 'startx -- :1'...it would close down the X session running on tty7, so I could not switch between them. This was, however, under Mandy 7.2, so things may have improved.

I just did a test and got three X sessions running without a problem. This may be an issue with your config, or it might be that you are trying to run a session on display :1 when one if already there. Change the number each time.

X doesn't touch the sound card, if only one session can access it you are probably running something to lock it. Most likely KDE (specifically the arts demon)
