How to rename a partition

Hey all,

Is it possible to have data in /dev/hda1 /dev/hda3 and /dev/hda4 renamed so that :

/dev/hda1 stays named /dev/hda1
/dev/hda3 becomes /dev/hda2
/dev/hda4 becomes /dev/hda3

i was thinking I could use fdisk or cfdisk and rename them without reformatting, but I didn't want to hurt any data (although it's not likely, right, without reformatting?) and/or run into problems rebooting.

Thanks in advance.

the hdaX number refers to the partition order on the HDD -- you're not going to be able to change that without deleting your partitions, which deletes the formatting. The only way I could think of to do that is to partition a new HDD and copy your data over, partition by partition.

Yes, fdisk in expert mode can do it. (Press x for extra functionality, once there f will fix the partition order).
