how to redirect barcode reader to xterm window or ssh login

How do I detach my USB barcode reader from the console and attach it to a bash shell (or other application) running via an ssh login or xterm?

I have a generic USB barcode reader. It works great on the system console, tty1, and any application running on the system console. It shows up as /dev/input/event8. I can "od /dev/input/event8" from ssh/xterm, but all I get are the binary codes and the ASCII barcode still shows up on the console. I want the ASCII bar code to show up on my ssh/xterm login.
