How to play microsoft ages of empires multiplayer, via SSH Tunneling?

Hello,

Here is a new difficult mission, ssh tunneling because one friend has a poor router brand. So he'll login with putty to my linux via SSH, 10.1.1.10. He tunnel-ed dynamic those necessary ports, below, with putty into Tunnels.

My pc 10.1.1.15 microsoft xp installed with ages of empires cannot see him to 10.1.1.10, as LAN TCP IP gaming multiplayer.

to finally play it:

Any experts in those fields?

Are you running XP with Service Pack 3 installed? I don't know about Age of Empires 2, but the original Age of Empires can't do multiplayer when running on Service Pack 3 due to SP3's version of DirectX not including DirectPlay. The solution I use is to run Service Pack 2 in a virtual machine, and I use Hamachi (also installed in the vm) to create a VPN.

You run AOE in a virtual machine? Last I checked the game didn't support the virtual graphics adapter for vmware or vbox. Or are you talking VirtualPC?

I use VirtualBox OSE 3.0.4 r50677. It works without any problems, as did the older versions of VirtualBox that I've tried (can't remember their version numbers). In the past I've also used Virtual PC 2007, also without problems.

I asked him tonight about the service pack.
But I am still confused how to make the connection.

- LAN IP or Internet game.
- He looks via putty SSH to my box, and Dynamic forward the ports on the linux box. then how to make the connection? (he's firewalled, so my linux box would host the connection)

everest40 08-27-2009 01:18 AM

I think what he should do is choose LAN IP, and if/when it asks him to put in an IP address, enter "localhost" or "127.0.0.1". If this doesn't work, then I'm out of ideas :(

it should somehow possible. everything is possible with Linux
but certainly few of users tried those not common ssh. 5pct of users have linux, so 0.0005pct can have tried eventually :)

frenchn00b 08-27-2009 01:15 PM

Oh ...
I think that I found better VPN ?
which port?
OUT will be possible from my friend through his crap py router

frenchn00b 08-28-2009 08:31 AM

my putty wasnt right

should have been:

click on local
2300-2400
localhost:2300-2400

then click on add

that tunnels the ports to the localhost

but it is theory, no idea if it works

here a shot of putty: http://home.highertech.net/~john/Put...ty-tunnel.html

didnt try yet

frenchn00b 08-30-2009 04:16 PM

Okay, so now, I can see my friend using VPN into my NETWORK. I see his created game, I click to join him :
other sense he doesnt see me.

But it says : "Unable to join"

WHo plays ages of empires II, it seems to be a frequent issue.

It is so strange because I could do it last year.
The original cdrom is of no scratches, because I loved that game and always have been very careful.

So it seems that windows 2000 and windows 98 havent any issue of firewalling. so?? we can ping normally, and all ports are working.

we have windows 2000 sp4 and windows 98se

doest someone knows where this sort of event. solution could be in network config?

Hi, I hope it wasn't too late.
I bought a WRT54GS and I have a lot of trouble with my children, cause I have the same problem ( WinXP SP2)
But I could solve the problen!
You must deaktivate the program Internetgateway!
You can unistall it. right click Network->properties->expented->optional Network->Netwokservices->Details->disable Internet Gateway device sarch and control-search.
I hope it was correct, cause a have a german version!
You can uninstall this programm on every pc.
Or you only deactivate or uninstall the service on the PC where you introduce the play!
Please excuse my terrible english!

on my win98, my ipx spx is enable:

Windows 95/98

If you are not using Windows 95/98 for networked game play, skip to the section below that covers DOS and Windows 3.x.

1. Install your network card. See your Network Card User Guide for complete installation instructions. If you are using 10BaseT, make sure that cable is connected to a hub. If you are using thin coax, be sure that your cabling, T-connectors, and terminators are all in place.
2.

Configure the Network card hardware. Some network card versions may come with a setup program that allows to you to configure the card's connector type, IRQ, I/O base, and other settings. If your User Guide doesn't mention these things, skip this step.
3.

Follow the directions in your User Guide for installing your Windows 95/98 network drivers.

When the time comes for you to choose the network protocols that you want to use, make sure to select the IPX/SPX protocol.

If you have already installed your Network software but have not added the IPX/SPX protocols, follow these steps:
1. start up Windows 95
2. go to Control Panel -> Network -> Protocols
3. click on the Add button
4. select the IPX/SPX Compatible Transport
5. follow any directions that appear on your screen
6. restart your computer

Remember, you must have File and Printer sharing enabled. This extremely important! See your User Guide for step-by-step instructions. The Windows 95/98 based games will not work without file and printer sharing enabled. You'll find complete instructions in your User Guide.

Repeat the above steps for all of the computers that you plan on networking together.
4. Test your network. Each computer should be able to see the other computers files, hard drives, etc. If you have problems, check your cabling. If you need further help, refer to your User Guide.
5.

After the IPX/SPX Transport Protocol has been added, and your computers are able to see each other, you're ready to install and use your game. With the IPX driver running transparently in Windows, your games will now be able to communicate with each other. Follow the installation and usage instructions that came with your game.

frenchn00b 08-30-2009 04:51 PM

wow Windows2000 and win98 worked, i.e. AOKII, they can play against each other and join games, both side !!

"IPX game shall be selected into the ages of empires"
so for windows 98, you shall go into start > panel > network and install IPX
forget LAN and Internet connection: not working.

so tomorrow, continuing again with PUTTY and VPN, because vpn is too heavy thing. Putty and port forward is far the best, because SSH.

frenchn00b 08-31-2009 03:58 PM

I tried everything with PUTTY and LOCAL
and REMOTE forwarding

2300-2400
47624
and + those ipx and netbios port such as 139 somthing
I target to do IPX connection for directplay, since it works

Anyideas to make the tunneling working?
:(

Putty tunneling for ages of empires is not working

Is there any guru in Informatic in this world ? March eventually?

putty tunneing for ages is of impossible

scheidel21 09-01-2009 08:11 AM

I would recommend trying something like openVPN for the multiplayer games, they tend to work best when using a VPN that is a bridged VPN, Hamachi is one of these but so is openVPN, you might have better luck with that.
