How to pack rar of a 160GB Hdd without volume dependencies and with 4.2GB max. size?
 

Hello

I am looking for packing lot of files without rar.01 rar.02 ... dependencies so tghat all rar can be independently unpacked.

Is that possible with linux machines ?

Unless the HD isn't filled much (so that using max compression would result in a 4.2GB rar) then you can't possibly rar the contents of a 160GB HD in 4.2GB. That has nothing to do with GNU/Linux but with unrealistic expectations... Disk spanning just works so I don't see the problem (well I do but you don't mention it) plus this seems to be somewhat of a dupe of or share overlap with your other recent "how to backup my HD" thread...

The size you end up with depends on the files you are packing.I had some stuff that went from 4gig to 160mb but thats rare.With anything multimedia compressing with rar and the likes wont do a thing.

I still don't understand what you're trying to do. It would help if you were to specify a purpose or give more info. What are you trying to compress ? you said several dvd ? if so, they will NOT compress very well at all. Now you're saying you want to compress the files on that HDD, not the HDD image itself, right (I'm trying to assume sanity here).

How small is each file. If they are small files put a batch to make up each rar, that way you don't need dependencies. Oh, and don't use rar, use 7zip.
