How to open a .rar file?

Hello

I need your help again. Recently you all taught me how to open a .zip file. Today I need your help for opening a .rar file.

I know how to open a .rar file in Windows XP. I haven't done in Linux. On Windows XP, I have installed 'Winrar' program.

I just mark the .rar file and click extract here; then the file decompresses.

I have Mandriva 2006 version.

How do I open the following .rar file?

'' Cisco IOS(TM) Software Quality of Service Solutions.rar ''

Your help is profoundly appreciated.

Download rar for linux from www.rarsoft.com

Gins 12-12-2005 02:39 PM

Thanks Komakino for correcting my English.

I am equally interested in writing proper English too.

I would always say your help, your support, your contribution, etc.

What is wrong with it?

You will help me to solve the problem. So I could say your help is/was very valuble to me.

Please tell me, if you can, why is it wrong? I can't fathom your point.

farslayer 12-12-2005 03:14 PM

Heh Looks like his Sig overwhelmed his answer to your post.. the english and grammer correction are in his sig which is part of every post.. the very first line of his reply however was the answer to your question..

I almost missed it too.. ;)

Farslayer, I would agree with you. Komakino wants to go one step beyond and write some English too.

I failed to grasp it.

You know this product for Linux .rar files is not free. I don't want to pay. On Linux, I live in a free world. They give a trial version; afterwards you must pay.

I think I found what you are looking for at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnomerar
I have never used this program, but it sounds easy. I use a program that works from terminal, but I can't seem to find where it is located now.

Bit of advice - if you want something like this, go to sourceforge.net and search.
I use it when I need open source products for Windoze as well.

As for sigs, with the site update you now have the option to turn them off.
Yahoo !!!

Lol, I don't either. But he really did say that in his biography, and I thought it was funny. Funny enough to be my signature at least.

Download it from your repositories like

You'll probably go through a lot of unecessary effort and difficulty if you try to compile it yourself. Goto http://easyurpmi.zarb.org and setup the software repositories and then use menu->System->Configuration->Packaging->Install Software (or the urpmi command) to get it.

Once you've installed unrar the GUI archiving programs (ark and file roller) that are installed by default on Mandriva will be able to open rar files - you shouldn't need to download a specific GUI.

I thank everybody for the contribution.

Our friend ' linux = future ' suggested a program. I tried in vain to install it. Please read the following:

Install the autoconf and automake packages for your distro?

Gins 12-14-2005 01:50 PM

Thanks Nylex for the comments.

Would you expect them to be on the origianal CDs? I have 4 or 5 CDs which I downloaded from a FTP site

tkedwards 12-14-2005 03:47 PM

Gins you need to goto easyurpmi and setup your sources, then you can use menu->System->Configuration->Packaging->Install Software (or the urpmi command) to install whatever you want - automake, autoconf, make, unrar etc.

The package sources don't seem to have a package for gnomerar but as I said before its probably redundant since Mandriva already installs ark and file roller by default to open archives. Those apps will be able to open rar files once you've installed the unrar package.

If you still want to install gnomerar you'll need to install autoconf, automake and the -devel packages for any libraries it complains about in the configure using menu->System->Configuration->Packaging->Install Software
