Check if the fuse module is configured for your kernel.

zcat /proc/config.gz | grep -i fuse

If you don't have /proc/config.gz, look for a config-* file in /boot/ whose version matches your kernel. The package you installed may have been the userland programs, such as mount.ntfs-3g and sshfs.
