Question How to Mount NTFS filesystem in RH7.2

Hello there,

I have recently installed Red Hat Linux 7.2 on my PC which also has a Windows NTFS file system. Unfortunately I am unable to mount the NTFS filesystem in Linux even for read-only mode, can you please help me how can I solve this problem.

Many thanks & best regards,

Salman

Enable the NTFS read-only option in your kernel (do not try to use it read and write, so do not enable it) then recompile.

do this under root:

mkdir /mnt/winxp
mount -t ntfs /dev/hdaX /mnt/winxp

X = your partition number (check it out with 'dmesg')

Later,

Tb

this is how you recompile your kernel-

download thelatest kerne; from kernel.org( ONLY if you have a very fast connnection, cuz it's about 25 MB avg.), untar it into /usr/src by 'tar -zxvf <kernelname>.tar.gz',
or
load the kernel source from the cd it's <kernel-source>.i386.rpm,
then , if you're usingthe GUI, thype 'make xconfig', and you;ll land up with a configuration box. Explore the various options to build your own custom kernel.
under the 'filesystems' tab, enable the NTFS filesystem support option. after kernel configuration is done, select 'save configuration and exit'.
then type' make dep clean bzImage modules modules_install' to build your kernel.
this takes time. after it's done, copy the /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage file to /boot as vmlinuz-<kernel-version>, and the /usr/src/linux/System.map file as /boot/System.map-<kernel-version>
thereafter edit your lilo.conf file to accomodate the new kernel, and then RUN /sbin/lilo AS ROOT. don't forget this step.
on rebooting, select the new kernel, and then mount your NTFS partition.

good luck,
oneuponzero.
