Question How to modify PAM.d conf. files

help me , i am a newbie....
i forgot root password ,then i go into sigle user mode and want to change a new password using passwd command,but fail i only login system through linux single mode, can you help me?

run redhat 6.2(Zoot) ,kernel 2.2.14-5.0 on an i586.

apsswd error information: use not known to the underlying
authentication module

lilo boot: linux single

login conf. file:
auth required /lib/security/
auth required /lib/security/ shadow nullok
auth required /lib/security/
account required /lib/security/
passwd required /lib/security/
passwd required /lib/security/ nullok
use_authok md5 shadow
session required /lib/security/
session optional /lib/security/

passwd conf. file:
auth required /lib/security/ shadow nullok
account required /lib/security/
passwd required /lib/security/
passwd required /lib/security/ use_authok nullok
md5 shadow

HOW TO RECOVERY original Login ? How to modify conf. files?
give me detail..
