how to make linux(centOS) use more than 1 partitions

Hi,
I have just upgraded memory from 512Mb to 1.5Gb, and i need to extend the swap partition which was 1Gb. I did make another partition (2Gb) for swaping but i dont know if i have to do anything else beside adding another lines to /etc/fstab to make the system use the new partition as swap. I am using centOS (RedHat Enterprise liked) and gentoo
If anyone know, please help.
Thanks in advance
Thai

You should be able to just change the fstab and then either reboot or remount all partitions (remount -a ???, I forget).

Of course, you may not actaully NEED to use more swap... Many machines now a days hardly access swap if they have 1.5Gb...

I never see my swap file being touched, but since i install oracle 10g, i must make it double my ram size or oracle will complain about it.
Thanks for the advice

You can use a swap file rather than partition. There are details of how to do it in man mkswap...

Yes, you need to format the swap partition using the mkswap command.
mkswap /dev/hdxy (Where xy are the drive/partition IDs of the new 2GB swap partition)

The swapon /dev/hdxy command will activate without rebooting. Check the output of the free command to verify the additional swap space. It should be 3GB total if you kept the original.
