hi everybody
i want to use internet on red hat linux through dial up connection.
presently i am using internet using my cell phone as modem through blue-tooth.But i want to use internet on red hat through my cell phone.
is it possible?i am using nokia 2630 handset.my bluetooth dongle is not supporting linux.please tell me from where i can get a bluetoothe dongle that support linux?

just curious but is there a cable that allows you to attach your cell phone to your computer via usb? perhaps a bit more reliable, second, the HCL might help

wvdial is probably the best option for establishing the connection. What kind of modem are you using: USB or serial?

if you are not going to pay for red hat , then DO NOT USE IT

you will not be able to install software .At least not any where near easily


use the FREE community supported version CentOS


the software you need to install would require using "yum" on the Red Hat Network ( RHN) software repo
you get access to that AND TO ALL software updates and the needed source ( -devel.rpm) BY BUYING THE LICENSE

then this is a wireless network ?3g? connection and NOT a 56 k dial up on a telephone wire( a copper wire)

install centOS 5.5 and it should work

If you want to use a "Land Line" wvdial is a program which is needed to do this. wvdial-1.61-3.fc13.i686.rpm has a dependency named libwvstreams-4.6.1-2.fc13.i686.rpm. Wvdial will not work without this dependency (additional file and or application) installed. These are RPM file names that are easy to install. These are files/applications for Fedora 13 but you can probably find applications for your particular Linux OS at http://rpm.pbone.net/ Usually to install a RPM file you download the file and right click onto the file icon and a menu will appear that lists install. There are manual choices to select in wvdial that will make it inoperable if not set correctly.

I'm guessing that you have a version of RedHat that came with your computer already installed. Redhat is a proprietary Linux version. Fedora and Centos are Free versions of Redhat. With Redhat you have support like Microsoft. If and when you are able to do a O.S install yourself, you will be better off with a "Free" version of a Linux O.S. Redhat , Fedora and Centos are not a prime choice for a new Linux user. Ubuntu and it's variants are better for a new user.

From your original post you are not separating "being on line" and how you are doing it, where it be from a land-line or from wire-less. Most people incorrectly use the term "being on line" to mean that you are SOMEHOW connected to the internet (web).

you are not getting me.i am learning linux using vmware.i have installed red hat 5 on vmware.And i am using internet on windows xp.Windows xp is installed on my pc.i am not able to use internet using red hat so i am using windows xp.i dont have landline internet connection.i am using nokia 2630 as modem and bluetooth device to connect it to pc.i want to use linux only.But i want to use internet so i need to use windows for that.
can u tell me from where i can get free dvd of centos or fedora?because i dont have broadband connection.my internet speed is very slow.also tell me whether my pc support 64 bit os or not ?my pc configuration is given below.

now you state that it is an install using vmware on xp

if you do not know then i think you need to do a bit of learning first.You seam a bit confused on some things ( that will improve in time )

installing and using a linux OS IS going to require A LOT of work on YOUR part - to learn a bunch of new things , AND UNLEARN some Microsoft things.
you might want to start by going to your local large book store . Talk to the people there and pick up a "basic" book on the subject

- NOT- recommend installing CentOS or Fedora as your VERY first install
both are not designed with NEW users in mind .They can be a bit overwhelming , and difficult to install things on

The method used to connect depends entirely on what hardware youz are using -what type of connection. Linux is perfectly capable of connecting using bluetooth to connect using your cell-phone, DSL, cable-broadband, dial-up or whatever. You just need to staet exactly what you are trying to do and look for help with that. The title of the thread says 'how to make a dial-up connection', so anyone would assume you wanted to know how to connect a serial or USB modem to a land-line telephone connection. If you want to connect your linux box to a bluetooth-enabled cell-phone and use that connection, then you need to state it that way. And we'd need to know how the cell-phone connects -is it UMS, 3G or what?
