How to investigate a shutdown which is not working?

Hi everyone,

i have a gentoo 2007-1 with a kernel 2.6.23-r4 and i have problems when doing a normal shutdown with gdm. in fact i have the service called "named" which stay in state freeze and do nothing.

I wand to investigate why this service is not working. Is there a way to give a verbose mode when we do a shutdown via gdm;

I have already checked the /var/log/messages but no errors appear.

can someone help me ?

thank you,
Ade05fr
