Red face How to install software in Linux?


I am trying to install a software in linux redhat. I open the cd drive and there are lot of rpm...... I double click it then a windows come out. I mark the sotware then click install. but nothing happen and I couldn;t find any icon for my new install software. Can anyone please help me? My icq is 25828685. YOu can always add me in. THANK YOU.

In RedHat you can install software several ways. One way is to install the software from the command line with a command like...

rpm -i someprogram.rpms

There are also built in graphical programs depending on which desktop you are using (gnome/kde?).

Until you get comfortable with how rpms work (or even better with compiling your apps) I suggest that you download APT4RPM and Synaptic, and let it do the work for you.

What did you installed actually? Sometimes even you installed some programs, the icons won't be added automatically. Try to open a console window(where you can enter command), type the name of the program to see if it works.
