How to get to the kdm login(not working on my computer)!

The problem I have is I have to login as root in terminals befor I get to the kdm
login screen how do I set root password for this and then login the graphical screen to kde or gnome as reg. user.

This is mandrake 9.0 rc2 and is there an init that I can edit to set these configuration to get auto on kdm or root login

The gdm and kdm I have no problem with autologin when my computer first boot I can never get to that screen.
