How to get a packet capture using WireShark

Hello,

I am trying to get a packet capture file using WireShark. I would like to analyze it using WireShark on my XP machine. I do not know much about Linux nor WireShark. The server is running on Fedora 8. Can someone tell me how ot go about doing this?

Thanks!

EDIT:

I tried doing the following command:

wireshark -a 60 -w test.pcap

and get the following error:

(wireshark:13282): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

If I understand your question correctly you want to take a trace on your Fedora Server and analyse the results on your XP machine?

So you need to run Wireshark on your server, and the first question has to be, does it have a desktop environment installed?

If so it should have installed with an icon from which you need to run it. I don't recall it being a command line program.
If you have no desktop installed on your server, try tcpdump which is a command line packet sniffer. I'm fairly sure that you can open tcpdump files in wireshark, so all you need to do is retrieve the dump file onto your XP by whatever means you have, i.e. Samba share, or FTP.
