how to find out the reason when the system stops

Hi,

I am running a private Linux server on the Internet.
Sometimes I find my system was shut down without any guess.

I guess that happened by the reason of kernel aborts, my operation miss, etc.
But I do not know why.

How can I know the last event when the system stops for fixing above?

Thanks,
Shigeru

have you looked at the logs?

Yes, I looked at the file "messages" in var/log.
Does linux make log when it aborts or in the case of power loss?

thanks,
shigeru

It may leave a core-dump if that is compiled into the kernel.

THAT would be a physical impossibility, I'm afraid :}
