how to enhance video performance

I found that avi video output on my RH 9 is quite slow and jerky.
I think there must be a way to enhance the video performance, can someone give me some hints, as I am new to linux can you please make it clear.
my system is VIA epia mini-itx board with integrated C3 E series CPU, Trident 3D integrated graphic card( 8 MB memory with 4 MB used as in /proc/mtrr), 128 MB Memory.
Hardware acceleration is grayed out at display setting panel, i don't know why.

how you guys do to make video output more robustic?
