Well, xev tells you the keycodes, xmodmap assigns the keycodes to specific keys if necessary, and then you're into WM-specific territory.

And there *is* a way of assigning those same keys to work in the console, but I can't remember what it is. . .

If you use Gnome: Desktop preferences -> Keyboard shortcuts
If you use KDE: Control center -> Regional & Accessibility -> KHotKeys
Otherwise: man xmodmap & google

Thanks oneandoneis2, ahh.

I have problems assigning "Word" and "Excel" buttons.
Their keycodes are 129 and 130, but KDE Menu Editor doesn't accept them.
E.g., "WWW" button is accepted by Menu Editor as XF86HomePage.
But there's no name for the above two buttons.
I added the following to ~/.Xmodmap :
Code:
keycode 129 = Word
Although Menu Editor doesn't accept the two buttons.
I have Genius comfy KB-16e scroll, but "xorgconf" had only KB-21e scroll.

Any advise?

Thanks.

Thanks, ahh. That was really helpful.

I've just added the following to ~/.XModmap :
Code:
keycode 129 = XF86Word
keycode 130 = XF86Excel
Now I can call Emacs pressing Word button

I have the following problem now.
I've switched to 2.6.13 from 2.4.32 and now 2 my multimedia buttons don't work in X. These are Word and Excel button. All the rest (WWW, Email, Calc) work just fine.
"xev" doesn't respond to Word and Excel buttons... how can I use them now?

Thanks.

Anyone knows the solution?
