how to convert ext2 fs partitions into fat/ntfs?
 

Hi all,

My HD is partitioned this way : ext2, linux swap and ntfs. Having launched the mkdosfs command from within the primary linux partition (ext2), I screwed this one up and could not boot linux anymore.
The only application that could recognise my ext2 partition is PQ magic; But, it couldn't convert it into fat/ntfs. Does anyone have a clue on how to do it from within windoz XP?

PQ partition magic won't change the filetype, but it will allow you to delete the partition and create a new one. Final result is the same though :)

I was wondering if the delete option was not blowing the partition in some irreversible way :newbie:

actually pq magic 8 WILL change the file system I just did it changed ntfs to ext 3

Ok, did something similar, but the other way round is more problematic. I've tried converting used ext2 and ext3 partitions to fat and PQ would only allow delete, not change (maybe because there were files on the system?).
Dunno what you mean by 'blowing the partition' apart from the fact that all data will be lost, but that also happens if you change the filetype (e.g. from ext2 to fat)
Of course, if you create a new partition with a different size or type (promary/extended) your partition table will change and depending on where this change takes place might affect your booptup, but that doesn't apply in this case as the partition are at the end.
