That's because you are trying to use port 25 on gmail. Do not use gmail, use *your* mailserver.

env MAILRC=/dev/null smtp-auth-user=SENDER smtp-auth-password=Pass smtp-auth=login mail -n -s "subject" < file.txt
send-mail: Cannot open mail:25
Can't send mail: sendmail process failed with error code 1
It is supposed to work with your mail server, not gmail

Anyway, I've installed mutt from sources and it does not segfaults as the stock slackware mutt binary. The only differences I can see running mutt -v for both binaries, are the following (in bold):
Mutt 1.5.21 (2010-09-15)
Copyright (C) 1996-2009 Michael R. Elkins and others.
Mutt comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY; for details type `mutt -vv'.
Mutt is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it
under certain conditions; type `mutt -vv' for details.

System: Linux 2.6.38-rc6 (i686)
ncurses: ncurses 5.7.20081102 (compiled with 5.7)
libidn: 1.19 (compiled with 1.19)
Compile options:

So you can try to build mutt from source (use ./configure --enable-smtp --enable-pop --enable-imap --with-sasl --with-gss) and see if it works
