It is supposed to work with your mail server, not gmail
Anyway, I've installed mutt from sources and it does not segfaults as the stock slackware mutt binary. The only differences I can see running mutt -v for both binaries, are the following (in bold):

So you can try to build mutt from source (use ./configure --enable-smtp --enable-pop --enable-imap --with-sasl --with-gss) and see if it works
