how to change the default mail delivery location

where and how is a users default mail delivery location defined ?

how can it be changed to /home/$USER ?

I have RedHat with Sendmail MTA and Procmail MDA and UW-IMAP running.

is it the login.defs ? if so how do you modify it to achieve this ?
or is it somewhere else?

All thoughts and suggestions welcome.

There are a couple of choices. Most systems seem to use a mail folder, but a mail file can be used instead.

login.defs contains the line to define which to use

one of these can be used

MAIL_DIR somefolder
MAIL_FILE somefile

so you could use one or the other,
both are referenced from the users home folder, so entering a name without a path will cause it to be in the /home/$USER folder

By all indications it would be login.defs. Yet NOTHING I have done to the file alters the default mail delivery location of /var/spool/mail.

I tried …
Create a test dir (/var/spool/test) and modify login.defs so MAIL_DIR is /var/spool/test – NOGOOD.
Pound MAIL_DIR and unpound MAIL_FILE /.mail – NOGOOD.

I userdel and useradd’ed between each test.

What am I missing?

Frustrated

There is also a line for setting MAIL in /etc/profile

MAIL="/home/$USER/.mail"

After that's set I'm not sure but maybe rebuild sendmail.cf and submit.cf

I've never tried to change it.
