How to change resolution

Winex crashed, and resolution was 800x600. Desktop's resolution is 1280x1024.
Desktop is still 1280x1024, but I can only see 800x600 pixels of it.
Alt + Ctrl + numpad -/+ didn't work. Only thing (I know) to get screen normal, is to restart X, and that I don't want to do...
Is there any other ways?

just hit ctl alt backspace, then log back into x startx you wont have to restart so any ssh or ftp or anything like that wont be turned off

why is it that you can't restart x?
