how to change resolution

Is there a way to change the resolution from 1040x768 (or whatever) to 800x600 without rebooting? Anything as easy as it is in windoze where you can dynamically change the resolution?

I'm using knoppix 3.3 with KDE, and I know how to select the resolution during bootup, but sometimes I may want to change resolutions without rebooting linux altogether...

I'm not totally sure how Knoppix works but it might load a default XF86Config file where it has different resolutions already configured.

Try doing a ctrl - alt - ( + or - ) to change resolutions.

Hi guys,

I've got about 10 resolutions in my XF86Config file, yet when in Gnome/KDE, Ctrl + Alt + Plus (or minus) only cycles between 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768...

The problem is, I'm quite a resolution nazi and would like to run at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 (or higher depending on which monitor I'm using)......

Now all these higher resolutions are in my xf86config file, yet it still just cycles through the standard three..

Is there a separate place where you have to tell GDM, or the X server which resolutions to use, or is this all setup in the /etc/X11/xf86config.. How can I make sure this it the config file that is being used, as any change I seem to make doesnt seem to do very much.. I also have xf86config-fwb?!?!? (Spelling) and xf86config-vesa in the same directory, X doesnt default to one of them does it?

Hi everyone! Well kwiksand, you might want to check if ALL of the resolutions you want to cycle through are mentioned under your Default depth and not under some other. If that's not the problem then we'll just have to dig a little deeper Hope this helps! And Happy New Year to you all!
