Most files of this type are basically just bitwise copies of the whole of the CD - although some include some extra information in the header of the file.

Your first port-of-call should be to test out whether it can be read as a normal ISO file...mount filename.toast -o loop /mnt/floppy (needs to be run as root) would be good (that will try to mount the .toast file on the /mnt/floppy directory - make sure you're not using the floppy at the time )

If that works, then you should have no problems simply burning it using cdrecord. If it doesn't, then a little more investigation is needed.

PS Do not forget to unmount the .toast file (using the -d option) before you burn it to a CD.

I have a .toast file as well, but seems to be a HFSplus image. I can mount and view it nicely with mount -o loop -t hfsplus image.toast /mnt. However, cdrecord doesn't appreciate it so much. Anyone know how to burn a .toast that is not a pure ISO image?

I know this thread is beyond ancient, but here's how:

Code:
growisofs -Z /dev/sr0 -R -J Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD.toast

Use wodim

wodim -eject -tao speed=4 dev=/dev/sg1 -v -data Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD.toast

This didn't work for me as it gives a weird error about "DVD-9". However, I was able to burn a CD like so:

Code:
wodim -v -eject System\ 7.1\ CD-ROM.toast
For people who don't like the command line, you can probably just rename it from ".toast" to ".iso" and have it work.

Thanks, @Pithor, for suggesting wodim. I skipped the speed setting you had as I've found that trying to throttle the speed can cause some CD writers to make bad burns. I also left out setting the CD device explicitly as wodim is able to detect that nowadays. Finally, I left out -tao (track-at-once) since wodim's default (disk-at-once) also works and is, I believe, actually the correct mode for disk images like this.

Footnote: the old SCSI CD-RW drive I have hooked up to a Mac Plus won't read from any of the shiny silver CD-Rs I tried. However, it could read an old orangish-gold one from long ago. I finally had success when I found some blank "Memorex Black" CD-Rs, which work perfectly.
