There are 3 issues involved: the BIOS, the kernel and the bootloader.
First, obviously, your BIOS must support booting from USB.
Second, the kernel needs SCSI support and usb-storage. These either must be built into the kernel or you need to use an initrd.
Lastly, the bootloader, you mention grub, so we'll go with that. In grub, drives count from zero, so the first hard drive is hd0, the second is hd1 and so on. So, assuming your box has 1 hard drive in it, then the USB drive will be hd1.
BIOS supports USB booting, the kernel on the ipod is scsi.s and im assuming it supports usb-storage on boot. ill take the (hd0,x) advice...ill repost w/ results tonight
