Cool how to add icon with the command line


I am currently trying to use a software disribution tool to add an application to a series of Linux workstations redhat
is there anyway I can script adding an icon to the desktop or to the menu bar


??????

just put the file in the users Desktop folder depends on the wm

like this for gnome

cat ~/.gnome-desktop/Xterm.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Exec=xterm -bg black -fg white
TryExec=
X-Gnome-DocPath=
Terminal=false
Name[en_US]=Xterm
GenericName[en_US]=xterm
Comment[en_US]=XTerm
