Post How to add an FTP user who can just read and download the files and folders?

Hi all,

I setup a RedHat 7.2 box and configured WU-FTPD service on it.
I created /opt/ftp directory and copied some files and folders to /opt/ftp. Then I added a user called FTPGUEST for my FTP clients, through which they can list and download, but NOT upload and delete, the contents in this directory.
Now I think I can't give /opt/ftp directory a fit CHMOD status. I tried some ways. Sometimes FTPGUEST can not only read the files, but also can erase them. Some other time, FTPGUEST can't even list the files.
Please give some guide on this point.
Thank you in advance.

BTW: I also wish this FTPGUEST user could NOT log into my RedHat box tty or pst entries, no matter locally or remotely.

Well basically don't give them permissions to write to the directory to upload to by basically not giving them ownership.

Might want to check the man pages for chmod, chown and chgrp.

And if you don't want them to have basically shell access, just give them a false shell like /bin/false by adding that as their default shell in /etc/passwd and adding /bin/false to your /etc/shells file.
